Agricultural productivity is far different now, from the 1st half of the 20th century. The advancement of Agricultural Technology started from the 2nd half of 20th century and at the beginning of 21st century. Presently, the use of technology in agriculture is rapidly increasing.
In the past, farmers used traditional farming practices with the handy tools, plough, cows, bullocks, organic fertilizers, natural resources etc. But nowadays farmers have adopted modern farming practices with the use of portable engines, ploughing engines, tractors, threshing and harvesting machines, irrigation pumps, seed drillers and so on.
Today, the farming practices require less manual labor compared to the traditional farming practices by the use of technology. Technology adoption also leads to higher yield within a limited time frame.
The journey of technology in agriculture started with the innovation of new varieties of crops to the innovation of efficient machineries. The chain of innovation is continuously increasing.
To meet the increasing demand of food, agriculture tends to adopt technology in all their aspects. As for example with the use of Agricultural Biotechnology, farmers can now produce any crop, throughout the year. They do not have to wait for appropriate seasons. Furthermore, Genetic Engineering has contributed a lot in agriculture through innovating different kinds of disease resistant and climate adjusted seeds for crops. Thus, this way technology has led to tremendous expansion and revolution in the field of agriculture.
Technology Adoption:
Technology adoption has not only indicated the acceptance of new machineries but also acceptance of modern management practices and conservation of resources.
As technology has profound impact on poverty alleviation and agricultural growth, it will be the core of developmental policies; particularly in the developing countries, that are largely dependent on agriculture.
Biotechnology and Genetic engineering are considered as a blessing for rural agriculture.
The adoption of technology has accelerated agricultural productivity and ensured sustainable growth particularly in this sector.
Nowadays, there are a lot of new technological machineries which may facilitate the farm management practices. The irrigation and seeding practices are continuously improving through new technologies.
Is Technology adopted by every farmer?
Though technology ensures the sustainable growth of agriculture, the adoption rate of technology is still low. There are many risks and uncertainty related to the adoption of technology for their proper application and fulfilling the expectations of the farmers.
Price can also be a factor which discourages the adoption of technical machinery by the farmers.
There are also so many constraints in the adoption process. In some rural areas, farmers have no idea about the new innovations. They are not provided, any kind of training in this regard.
Conclusion
In this modern era, we can not deny the advantages of technology and the various applications of it, specific in the agriculture sector. Technology ensures ecological benefit as well as sustainable growth in this sector. The crying needs of food can be satisfied by increasing the yields of crops. New machines, can help us to provide higher yield with the proper management of scarce resources. It can also improve, the living standard of our farmers. So, it is necessary that farmers should adopt new technical innovations in their farming practices both for - increasing productivity and a better livelihood.
Now, the question arises that - What initiatives should be taken, to ensure the adoption of technology in all spheres by the farmers?
